Her parents and brother passed away when she was only four years old after contracting smallpox; a disease that left Kateri disfigured and half blind as well. She was then adopted by an uncle who openly opposed Christianity and the French Jesuit missionaries staying in their colony. These same missionaries planted the seed for Kateri’s conversion. She was inspired after hearing them speak and slowly began exploring her faith by meditating and encountering God in nature on her long walks.
