Archangel Raphael (Res Malaka Rapael (in Syriac)) has a name that means "God heals" and in this icon we see him depicted with a chalice and spoon used to administer medicine. It reminds us of the role he played in the book of Tobit when he healed the blind!
You may also see other icons of him holding a staff and an orb, which represents his angelic authority. The orb is marked with an X, which is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ. I also think one of my favorite symbols in archangel icons are the little floating blue ribbons by their heads-almost antenna-like symbols that represent their obedience to God's instructions!
